I’m Nelson, and I am a two year old, totally adorable medium coat wirehaired dachshund. My rescuer named me after Willy Nelson’s song “Blue Eyes”, because my right eye is a stunning blue color. By the way, I can see out of this blue eye just fine. One of my front paws is missing a few toes, but I don’t let that stop me playing in the yard chasing tennis balls and rope toys, or following you around when you mow the lawn. I am a lean 12-13 lbs., and I barely shed a hair. I love to play, so I will need a home with another dog; preferably either one my age or my size. I have a split personality; I love to play outside, chase tennis balls and be chased, but I am also very good at down time, mellowing out and napping. I love cuddling on the couch and having my belly rubbed and ears played with. I respond very well to a soft voice and positive reinforcement. I love getting praised when I do something good, like doing my potty outside, or using a pee pad. I enjoy sitting with you on the couch, and snoozing while you’re watching TV. I will follow you around the house when you move from room to room. I like to lie right by your feet when you are in the kitchen, so if you can’t find me; look down at your feet! I am slowly learning to tolerate my weekly bath, as I was so dirty and flea infested when I was rescued, I get confused why I am being bathed again when I am now so clean! I have a habit of guarding my food and treats, but this goes back to when I was in a horrible situation, and I didn’t have much, so whatever I had I guarded. I am slowly learning that no one is going to steal my food!
I spent two years being kenneled, so I am not fond of being crated. I would prefer to learn to be well behaved inside your home, and have the crate there as my own personal dog cave to go into when I want to, and to keep my chew toys in, rather than being locked inside it. My potty training is coming along well, but I need someone with some patience to help me out; take me out frequently so that I learn to associate outside as the place to do my business, and get used to a schedule of going outside. I am improving using pee pads. I have not made a mess inside at night. I respond very well to an encouraging voice and positive reinforcement. I know how to use a dog door, and have no problems with steps or stairs.
If you are looking for a fun loving pup, with a sense of humor who likes to cuddle, play with your other dog(s), explore, is a great napper, who wants to become a member of your family, then I think I’m your guy.

Transportation Help
If you see a furbaby that is a match for your family, don’t let distance stand in the way of your adoption. LPDR can work with you to have a volunteer transport to assist with transportation or refer you to a paid transport.
