To describe Lucky in one word I would say FUN! He is an energetic, curious, determined little guy (about 10lbs). I have 3 dogs and loves to chase, play, and tug with them. I am also fostering 3 young puppies who are almost bigger than Lucky and wary at first he now runs and rolls with them.
One of the most important things to Lucky is to be near his people. Even though he loves other dogs his people are the most important thing to him. I joke that he wants to be literally glued to my side. If I am sitting down he must be on my lap when I sleep he is touching my legs. If he is nervous he jumps at my legs asking to be picked up. When I call him he comes running. And he has that cute ‘rocking-horse’ dachshund run with his ears flapping.
I have 3 cats and am fostering 2 older kittens. He is fine with my older cats but they are very dog savvy and think nothing of hissing to tell a dog to go away. The kittens like to play with Lucky but he can be just a little rough with them. I have to remind him to ‘play nice.’ He will stop but I may have to repeat myself 2 or 3 times.
LPDR isn’t quite sure of Lucky’s past, he was left in a box at someone’s house. From my experience with him I feel pretty certain he hadn’t been kept in a house. Housetraining him has been lengthy with lots of reminders and lots of praise when he goes potty outside. After working on this about a month I would say he is 95% housetrained. I still take him outside about every 2 hours when I am home. I have a dog door and a fenced yard and he can and does go out on his own. He doesn’t like to go out in the rain and needs lots of encouragement when the weather is bad. I feel like moving him to a new home may disrupt his housetraining but I also feel like once settled he will get right back to knowing the routine. Lots of praise goes a long way with Lucky.
When Lucky was turned into LPDR he had a pretty bad case of Demodetic mange (which is NOT contagious). He was treated and has been re-growing hair quickly over the last month. His hair is about 80-85% regrown and he is looking better every week. He doesn’t need any more treatment.
Lucky is a small black/red with a splash of spotted white on his chest. He is Heartworm negative, UTD on all shots, neutered and just waiting for his forever family to find him.
