Things to know about Bart:

  • Bonded with Homer. They must be adopted together.
  • Deaf. Experience with deaf or special needs pets is preferred.
  • Fenced yard preferred.
  • Attention needed when walking or letting him out as he is likely to run.

Bart is a handsome 3-year-old deaf dachshund with a gorgeous long white and tan double dapple coat. He weighs about 21 pounds. Bart is bonded with his buddy Homer. They cannot be separated and must be adopted together. Bart is house trained, and crate trained. When no humans are home, he and Homer do well crated together. Alternatively, they can be left to roam the house freely. They are perfect gentlemen. Bart would be fine living in any type of home including one with shared walls. However, he whines and barks for about 10 minutes after the humans have left the house.

Bart enjoys spending time outside so much so that he will make a beeline for an open front door and go wherever his nose takes him. Since he is deaf, he will not return when called. He would love to have a securely fenced yard to hang out in and play with his best friend Homer. Bart has not had much experience walking on leash. He’s working on it. Car trips are not his favorite thing, but he puts up with them if he has to.

Bart likes humans and does well with strangers that enter his home or that he meets on walks. He enjoys the company of respectful children. But he likes to jump up on them to lick their faces. His enthusiasm might cause small children to fall over. He barks and lunges at other dogs until they get close to him. Then he stops barking and starts sniffing. Since he loves to chase the neighborhood cats that come into his backyard, he cannot be adopted into a home with feline residents.

When we asked his foster mom what she likes most about Bart, she said that Bart is a lovable free spirit. He is deaf but does respond to some hand signals. He looks to his best buddy Homer to let him know what he is supposed to be doing.

Bart is currently living in Virginia Beach, VA with his foster mom Jocelyn. For additional information, please contact her at Jocelyn.pascual@gmail.com . If you would like to adopt Bart, please complete an adoption application form by clicking on https://www.littlepawsdr.org/adoption/adoption-applications/ .

The adoption fee for Bart is $325.00. If the dog is adopted over a state line, there will be an additional charge for a health certificate (required by law) of anywhere between $45.00 and $100.00. The amount depends upon what the veterinarian charges LPDR.

Transportation Help: If you see a dog that is a match for your family a LPDR volunteer transport may be arranged to bring the dog to you. However, some of our dogs have distance restrictions and need to be adopted within a specific number of miles from their foster homes. We’ll inform you if the dog you’ve applied for is not able to travel long distances by car. A paid transport can also be arranged for any dog that does not have travel restrictions.

Dogs adopted in New England are subject to additional rules and regulations by state departments of agriculture that may include a short stay in quarantine. Complying with these regulations is expensive for our rescue and some dogs going to New England states may be charged an additional $175.00 to cover costs of compliance.
