Ziggy is a 14.5lb pure dachshund—and 100% love bug—who is 13 years old. Ziggy is looking for a new home after his owner became concerned with his behavior around kids, but we have not seen evidence of this. He loves everyone, humans and dogs alike, but especially his person. Held, carried, cuddled, or kissed, he doesn’t care as long as he gets to be where you are. He’s an affectionate boy with a big personality who reflects the energy around him. He’ll tell you what he thinks in his own dachshund way, and has a unique way of letting you know when he is talking—with sneezes.
Environment
Ziggy’s potty training is excellent for a senior with Cushings. As long as he is let out at regular intervals he will rarely have accidents, just be sure to give him enough time to do his business outside. He doesn’t like to be crated but he will happily go to his bed to lay down and doesn’t cause any problems when he’s free range.
Ziggy's major issue is his separation anxiety. He hates being left alone so he will need people home more often than not, and probably not a home with shared walls. If you leave him for more than a few minutes at a time he will often bark, whine, or howl. This has improved somewhat over time and he’s working with his foster on a few tools to help with it. It would probably be ideal for Ziggy to have a fence as he does explore if let off leash and he is speedier than his age suggests. He needs a home where he won’t be required to do any stairs but aside from that he is very mobile. He may be a senior but he is young at heart and happy to go wherever you are—as long as he gets some attention.
Pets & People
Ziggy seems to love all calm adult dogs—even multiple dogs at once—and seems to actually prefer medium to large dogs. Puppies not so much. Given Ziggy’s more mature age, he doesn’t care for the exuberance. He hasn’t shown any food aggression but he does resource guard as he is very food motivated. He loves treats including but not limited to peanut butter, blueberries, carrots, and green beans.

 With people, Ziggy loves strangers in public and at home. He may bark from excitement with new visitors but quickly calms down and warms to people. As mentioned, he was surrendered due to concerns around children but he has been around older kids in his foster home and been fine. He has been supervised around younger children and had no incidents but we will proceed with caution.
Health
Ziggy has Cushings and it’s well managed with vetoryl once a day. He also is currently taking trazodone for anxiety. He also requires free access to water at all times and he is super food motivated due to Cushings. Sometimes he has to be cajoled and coaxed not to beg, as he will try his best to convince you he has never been fed in his whole life.
Location
Ziggy is available for adoption from Charleston, SC. He is great in the car and rides in the backseat with a harness and dog hammock, and he’s looking forward to his hammock ride to his new home.
