Adoption Fee:  $275.00 + $35.00 for a health certificate if going over state lines (required by law).  Dogs adopted in New England are subject to additional rules and regulations by the state departments of agriculture. Complying with these regulations is expensive for our rescue, and all dogs adopted in New England states are subject to an additional $125 fee to help cover a portion of these expenses.

We’re not sure why Rufus (his given name) was surrendered to a NYC shelter by his original owner because of “cost,” because he’s a perfectly healthy two year-old, wiggly 9-lb. bundle of joy who asks only for love and security. Very scared when he came to LPDR (hey, shelters are a scary place when you don’t where you are or why your humans left you!), Rufus has come out of his shell and is ready to start the best part of his life with a loving furever family.

Cautious at first, Rufus wants only to be where his people are. He knows his name, will come when called, follow you around the house, snuggle with you on the couch (he loves to sleep behind your neck or curl up on your chest) and sleep with you in the big bed once he gets to know you. He loves to burrow under the blankets and lay close to/on his human.

He’s fine with other small dogs, both male and female (currently living with 5 other dachshunds). He’s good with children who are considerate of his small size. Not sure about cats. He is guarded around new people until he knows he can trust them.

Like all dachshunds, Rufus is a curious little boy and very fast, so he would do best with a family who has a securely fenced yard; otherwise he must be on a leash if there is no fence. He has only just discovered toys – so far, his favorites are a cow hoof to chew on (no rawhide) and a small squeaky toy. He currently eats Blue Buffalo Wilderness Grain Free dry food.

Rufus can be vocal -- a typical dachshund, he barks at strange noises (and the alarm clock) and doesn’t like being left by his humans, even though he has canine company. He will stay in a crate if necessary, but will cry until he settles down. Having been abandoned by his first family, he needs to know that you aren’t leaving him and will always come back to him.

Rufus is mostly housebroken, but has an occasional accident, and will need time to adjust to his new home. He is neutered and up to date on his shots, and gets his heartworm and flea/tick preventative on the first of every month.

RI RESIDENTS – At this time we are not registered with this state and are unable to adopt to residents.  The process to register is lengthy and will take some time.  We are currently working on this process

TRANSPORTATION HELP!

If you see a furbaby that would be a match for your family, please don’t let distance stand in the way of your adoption.  LPDR can work with you to have a volunteer transport to assist with transportation or refer you to a paid transport.
