Schwartz was abandoned in an outside fence at the animal shelter on a weekend when the shelter was closed. No information was left on him and we cannot imagine why anyone would abandon him. He was already neutered and we estimated his age at approximately 9 years old. Schwartz loves everyone and has one of the best temperaments we have seen in a dachshund! Not an ounce of nippy or aggressive behavior. He is just happy go lucky all of the time!

He may be a senior, but he still has some spunk in him. He loves to run and play outside. He also loves tennis balls! When he's ready for bed or crated, he makes sure to always cover his head with a blanket. Schwartz is talkative and will grunt or whine at you if he wants something. He loves feeding time and will get excited and bark while his food is being prepared. He also loves to be held and cuddled. He is very much a lap dog.

Schwartz has the usual dachshund back issues. He gets around great though, but needs to avoid stairs so that he doesn't worsen his back. He is just 11.4#, so he is easy to carry around. He was underweight when dumped at the shelter, so he started out at 10# and has gained 1.5# since we've had him. It's important to not let him get overweight though. 12# would be a healthy weight for him.

Schwartz also has limped occasionally on his left rear leg. Xrays showed no abnormalities. He appears to have had an injury to his ACL, but it has tightened up now with crate rest and Carprofen, and the vet just recommends giving him glucosamine supplements daily and using an anti-inflammatory (like Carprofen) whenever he has a flare up. Currently he is not limping on it.

Schwartz has been such a great foster dog and fit right into our foster's pack of dogs without a problem.   Schwartz is still working on his housetraining and that will continue to be a work in progress for a while, however, he is very smart and a patient adopter will be able to work with him to improve this behavior.
